This is how the idea of necrobotics can be described, which, as the name suggests, is about turning dead things into robots. While this sounds like the plot of a spooky horror movie, this is a technology being researched at Rice University.
A team of researchers turned a dead spider into a
robotic pincer that can pick up other objects. To do this, they take a spider and inject air into it. This works because spiders use hydraulics to force their blood form (hemolymph) into their limbs, causing them to spread. This concept is still in its early stages right now, but it could portend a future where dead animals are used to advance science... it all feels a lot like Frankenstein!Sand batteries
Not all technologies that improve our future need to be complicated, some are simple but extremely effective. One of these types of technology came from some Finnish engineers who found a way to turn sand into a giant battery. These engineers collected 100 tons of sand in a 4x7 meter steel container. Then all this sand was heated by wind and solar energy. A local utility can then distribute this heat to heat nearby buildings.
Energy can be stored in this way for longer periods. This is all done through a concept known as resistance heating. Here a material is heated by the friction of electric currents. Sand and all other non-superconductors are heated by current flowing through them to produce heat that can be used as energy.
